The Paper Mulberry Tree

The Tree Project
Ben had a project to make a Paper Mulberry tree. This is the final result. . . He was reading a book in class called "Dicey's Song" by Cynthia Voigt where a Paper Mulberry tree has a major role.

A Blue Ribbon at the State Competition

Showing off the Blue Ribbon
Ben received a Blue Ribbon at the State Competition for the 2013 Science and Engineering Fair held at CCRI for his animation project. Judging Day, Saturday, was a long day starting at about 10:00 Ben had to stand by his display was judges by three judges.  He ended up showing the display to at least six judges just because everyone wanted to see it. Congrats Benjamin! Ben always had a crowd around his display whenever he was showing the Zoetrope. Everyone seems to like spinning things with flashing lights.  Ben also won the raffle and got a $100 gift certificate to be used at Best Buy. We are all so very proud of the hard work and great presentation Ben did. This coming Wednesday is awards night. . . which we are looking forward to.

The Winner Is. . . .

First Place for Sacred Heart School Science Fair
My project won first place (but there were 4 first place winners) in the school. I am very proud and looking forward to the State Science Fair Competition. Thanks again to everyone who helped out and voted in my surveys.

This is what my display looked like at school.
On the table is my big zoetrope as well as my smaller one and a phenakistoscope, a flip book, my log book and the 25 page report... and my 3 panel board too. If you haven't taken the survey you can still take it. See the column on the right.

The Zoetrope

We have the Zoetrope almost completed.. all we need to do now is to motorize it.  We have the motor and a speed controller so now we can work that out. But it has to go to the science fair as it is this week. This video shows both the Zoetrope and a Phenakistoscope that we made. The Zoetrope is made with wood, 36 magnets, a reed switch, some wire, a LED flashlight, a lazy susan bearing and 36 pencils. And a lot of math! I would like to thank everyone who took my surveys and helped me with my project.

Be sure to take the survey on the right
Here is another series of frame rate clips using me as live action. We shot this at 24 FPS and I changed it in Adobe After Effects. Please Vote on the survey called Walking and be sure to vote on the survey of the animation posted below as well. Ben

Animation Test for Science Fair

READ THIS BEFORE YOU WATCH
The video above shows a bouncing ball at different frame rates. I am trying to determine when the motion of the ball FIRST begins to look natural or smooth. Please watch the video (maybe a couple of times) and then vote by taking the survey on the right hand side of the screen. (at the top of the next column)
